Does Anyone REALLY Want World Peace?

How To Begin World Peace.

Every beauty contestant at one time or other says she wants World Peace.  Bumper stickers make fun of this with “whirled Peas” and there are faithful church-goers praying for Peace in the World. We approve of the prayers obviously; however,  what are we doing to actually lay the foundations for it?  If a citizen tries to study another religion, say, Islam, they are put on a list when they check the book out of the library.   If an American shows tolerance of other cultures they are suspect and Homeland  Security makes us all less secure as a result.

Perhaps we need to ask some logical questions.  We were once at war with the Japanese.  Now we are their good friends.  What changed to make that happen?  Let’s see. America helped repair their country after we bombed it.  Good, but not enough.  America trades with them and we use their nasty High Fructose Corn syrup we got in a swap in a trade agrement. Americans buy their big Motorcycles they only sell to other countries.  They aren’t allowed to be that crazy locally so the big honkin’ CCs come here. You know there are factory workers shipping out boxes of huge Japanese hogs thinking to themselves, “Not my funeral.”  Fine.  We have the land and straight long roads to do it on.  That may give them a sense of satisfaction.  But that doesn’t make them our friends.

Americans recognize that the Japanese are really smart; they produce earnest students, terrific electronics,  are smart enough to limit their population to suit their island and resources. We even try to emulate them and go to the trouble of learning Japanese.  It seems obvious that this approach is working well enough. We doubt another military attack will happen any time soon.

Well anyway ,we finally got Germany to tear down the Berlin Wall after we started appreciating what the Germans had to offer the world besides V-2 rockets.  (Well, maybe we appreciated what they had to offer along with the rockets: America recruited their scientists by the handful after the war.) It wasn’t uncommon to speak a decent amount of German, too.  It is almost like learning to converse with a people causes nations to stop being enemies.  What’s up with that?

On the bright side, there may be hope in the Gulf region now that we have had so many Americans going the Mid-East to build in the Sudan, and protect the oil fields in Iran, to try to clean up the mess in Iraq, and show the civilians everywhere that there is another way of life whether they want it or not. At least Americans are learning some of their language, that the peoples of the region practice their religion sincerely and do value Freedom.

They must because a lot of them fled their homeland under Saddam to come here  They speak the language well and hopefully write back that Americans aren’t all soldiers, or bigots, or have nothing about them to respect.  It seems that we really need to put our best foot forward so they do gain a good opinion of us.  We could show them respect in return.  That seems to work well.

All jokes aside because this is a serious issue, we will stand a better chance of having World Peace when we have World Respect.  After all, a person in her or his own country ought to be able to live as they see fit. We demand that right for ourselves why shouldn’t they?  If they don’t live as we do, so what.  It is their country, after all and their traditions are time honored, valued and work for them.  When their way of life doesn’t serve them anymore, they will change them as history has shown, and likely, they will become more like Western countries.

One Deity created all of us and our differences are no less valued than theirs. (Think about that a moment.)  Think like a global family and treat each other with respect.
“And if I am chosen to be Miss Decedent Sex Object,  I will dedicate my reign to World Respect.”  * * *

Promoting World Peace

In 2001 by the United Nation’s General Assembly, part of the UN declaration states that this day shall be…

“a day of global ceasefire and nonviolence devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples… the observance and celebration of which alleviates tensions and causes of conflict…an invitation to all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day…and an invitation to all Member States, organizations, and individuals to commemorate in an appropriate manner this International Day of Peace.”

I wonder how many in the world really take this day seriously? All you need to do is to monitor today’s news and see how much violence still occur everywhere in the world. Chances are this day will not differ from any other day we have witnessed. We still have a long way to go as far as world peace is concerned.

But on an individual basis, you can do something to promote world peace. Since the world is the sum total of individuals composing the world’s population, it is really at the individual level that world peace can sprout, grow and flourish. We cannot have a peaceful world with non-peaceful inhabitants. So before you worry in dismay about what’s happening hundreds of kilometers from you, look at how you yourself can contribute to world peace. Here are some suggestions on what you can do:

1. Contemplate any disagreement you have with people around you. They could be relatives, friends, or coworkers. Are there any areas of compromise you can hammer out with them? Peaceful coexistence start with compromises. Everyone needs to give in order to take.

2. Are there people you don’t like, even strangers at that? Do some mental exercise imagining if there is anything you can start liking about them and dwell on that even for today only. You could be planting the seed for a future peaceful coexistence with these people.

3. If you are a member of any religious organization that encourages giving a peace greeting (“peace be with you”, “peace be unto you”, shalom, etc.), take that greeting seriously for once and do not give your greeting like an automaton. Our religions have not been lacking in structures to promote peace; it’s just that very few of their members take those structures seriously.

4. Finally, do some introspection and consider if you yourself is at peace with yourself. You are not in a position to promote peace if you cannot even do that with yourself. If you are not at peace with yourself then ask yourself why? Your inner struggle with yourself contains the potentialities of all the conflicts you will be having with the world and everything in it. Becoming aware of your own internal strife is your first step towards finding a solution.

Promoting world peace is not only a collective effort but an individual effort as well. If you are an advocate for world peace, then start with yourself. It is a form of duplicity to complain how others are actualizing your advocacy when at your own level, you’re far from actualizing it. Start from yourself and from thereon, radiate it outward. As individuals like you multiply, we can hope of reaching the critical mass needed to make peace the dominant culture in this planet.

Where Can We Find Peace In A World Filled With Strife?

It is rare in today’s bustling modern world to find a sense of perfect peace. Living with terrorist plots that make travel uncomfortable, working in an economic environment which only causes stress and difficulties, knowing that there is still massive inequality in the world and that children in some countries are dying of hunger, all these things contribute to our disquiet. Where can we turn to for peace of mind?

Times like these remind us of Jesus’ words, that he came not to bring peace but a sword. Later, in the epistles of Paul, we read that the sword he meant was the sword of the Spirit. With Jesus came the power of the Holy Spirit which, though a comforter to those who believe, was a sword to be used against evil. Jesus was not some wide-eyed idealist who thought a few miracles would change the world overnight. Though hundreds witnessed his resurrection, many still refused to believe that he was the son of God.

The foundation of Christianity led to years of strife in his name, and it still continues today. The battle between good and evil will not end till we are all kneeling at the foot of the cross. But in the meantime we have a sword, not a real sword but a spiritual one, to fight the dark forces that reside in the spirit. The only way to tackle evil, to combat the moral decline of our society, is to take up the sword. On those nights when you are afraid to go out into the street for fear of being mugged, use the scriptures as your comfort, the Lord as your companion. Say a simple prayer for the safety of our children. Beg for the victory that will bring peace forever.

The only real peace that is possible in this life is the peace of God. It has been promised to those willing to take up the sword of the Spirit. The Spirit is both sword and dove. Peace comes through action, not through inaction. By making determined efforts to understand the words of Jesus and to pass them on to others we use the sword to usher in the dove. There in that place of selfless devotion lies the secret to everlasting peace.
